This easy steamed stuffed tofu is my husband’s favorite tofu dish, and the recipe is one of the many recipes I learn from my mother-in-law.
The combination of tofu stuffed with a mixture of ground chicken and tofu, lightly seasoned with salt, sugar, pepper, and soy sauce is a testament that simple food can look and taste amazing.
The flavor of the steamed tofu is positively on the delicate side, but when served with the chili sauce, this dish is sure to please everyone.
Ingredients for steamed stuffed tofu: firm/extra-firm tofu, ground chicken, scallions, salt, sugar, white pepper, soy sauce, and cornstarch. Ingredients for the chili sauce: red chilies, lime juice, soy sauce, and kecap manis.
Ingredients for stuffed tofu and chili sauce
1. Stuffed tofu
For the stuffed tofu, we will need firm/extra-firm tofu, ground chicken, scallions, salt, sugar, white pepper, cornstarch, and soy sauce.
2. Chili sauce
The chili sauce is a simple mix of fresh red chilies, lime juice, soy sauce, and sweet soy sauce (Indonesian: kecap manis).
How to prepare the stuffed tofu
1. Cut tofu into triangles
Cut each block of tofu into four rectangles, then cut each rectangle into two triangles. Since we are using two blocks of tofu, we end up with 16 triangles.
2. Hollow out the tofu
Make two slits to each tofu triangle, and remove a smaller triangular portion from each tofu triangle.
3. Prepare tofu and chicken stuffing
Mix tofu scrap with ground chicken, scallions, salt, sugar, white pepper, cornstarch, and soy sauce. Stir until the mixture is even.
4. Stuff tofu triangles with stuffing
Use the stuffing to fill the tofu triangles. If you have any leftover stuffing, shape it into 1-inch meatballs.
How to steam stuffed tofu
Prepare a steamer filled with about two inches of water and bring to a boil over medium heat.
Arrange stuffed tofu in a steamer-proof plate and steam for 15 minutes. If you have a small steamer, you may want to steam the tofu in batches.
Serve steamed tofu with chili sauce
Prepare a simple chili sauce by combining thinly sliced fresh red chilies with lime juice, soy sauce, and kecap manis. Serve the steamed tofu immediately once they are out from the steamer with the chili sauce and steamed white rice.
